Dealing with the feeling of anxiety and stress that comes with change

In the last three months, I have had to experience a huge change in my life, and honestly it has not been easy. I have had to deal with the feeling of being overwhelmed, anxious and even sometimes scared. I know I’m not the only one that has had to experience this kind of feeling. So it is for this reason I decided to broach this topic, cause there might be someone out there experiencing the stress, fear and anxiety that comes with change and may not know what to do. For those kind of people, I hope this newsletter gives you the solution you are looking for.

Change is an inevitable part of life, but knowing that doesn’t mean dealing with change is easy. I think that one of the reasons that the thought of change stresses us, is because of the little or large adjustment that we have to make which in most cases is not something that is easy to deal with. In the last few months that I have experienced change, and dealt with the feeling of fear and anxiety that came with it, there are a few things I have learnt. That is, no matter how much we try to avoid change, change is inevitable and being able to deal with the issues that comes with change is really important.

One thing , I have also come to learn from my experience is that change is a great facilitator of growth. When we get better at managing the stress that comes with change, we become more resilient and are able to confront future challenges. I can say that in the last few month, I have experienced so much growth, from the way I handle tough situations to the way I Interact with people and even the way I view myself. This growth only came as a result of the change I experienced.

Having dealt with the feeling of stress that comes with change I was inspired to research more and find out, how we can deal with the stress that comes with change. Here, are some of the tips I found;

Firstly, you could try to find the source of your stress. Figure out what aspect of the situation is stressing you out. If it is something you can change, find a way to change it. If it is something you can’t change, prepare yourself for the situation. Preparing yourself mentally helps, you will feel like you have more control over what’s going to happen. It is often the unexpected changes in your life that leaves you feeling afraid and unsure of what will happen.

Writing in a journal can often decrease stress and anxiety. It can also be a useful tool for learning more about your stress sources. Here are some journal prompts you can use to learn more about your stress sources.

What was it about the situation that caused you to feel stressed?

What did you think about the situation?

How did it make you feel?

What did you do in response to the stress?

What did you do to relieve the stress?

Another way is to avoid relying on avoidance coping techniques. While avoidance can reduce stress in the short term, research has found that it actually increases stress and anxiety in the long term. Avoiding that change however, will inevitably lead to more stress and unhappiness down the road. Preparing yourself and taking proactive steps toward dealing with changes is a better way to take control and feel empowered.

The way you think about the change also plays a huge role on how you will view the change. If you already view the change in a negative light, then you will never be able to see the positive in that situation.

Trying to maintain your daily routine can help as well. When an unexpected change happens, holding on to a sense of normalcy can be a useful way to minimize stress and find comfort. Research has found that maintaining routines can help people get a better handle on symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Finding support from family and friends is essential for mental well-being, family and friends can provide support by listening, providing empathy and comfort.

I hope with this few tips I have provided, you are able to make good use of it when the situation arises for its use.

One last thing I want to leave with you is that change leads to growth, because it challenges you. So the next time you are faced with a change that stresses you out, rather than complain about how much you hate the situation, ask yourself what the opportunity in that stressful situation is, and how that lead to your growth? It is when we are eager to find an opportunity in every challenging situation in order to grow, that we truly become a better version of ourselves.

wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

bye my love, see you next week Sunday.
